The Bandit

Returning home, an Italian prisoner of war learns that his mother died in the bombing of their house. Only a sister survived. After much searching, he finds her in a brothel with a man. They quarrel, they fight, and the man dies in the fray. The brother takes refuge in the house of a woman who involves him with a gang of thieves. The police finally corner him and, in the attempt to shield a little girl, he is shot. This realistic drama, featuring a forceful Anna Magnani, reveals shades of Howard Hawks.
