1866, Italian patriots battle for independence against the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Countess Sepieri (Alida Valli) betrays her marriage and country for an Austrian Officer (Farley Granger). Later, confronted with the man’s cynicism and treachery, she reports the man to his own superiors. He is tried and executed. The play of passions is carefully paced and the cinematography sumptuous. A fine example of director Luchino Visconti’s penchant for compositional elegance. |
