A control group of volunteers spend twenty days in a fallout shelter so that Doctor Monroe (Burt Lancaster) can study their reactions under claustrophobic conditions. The group divides into two camps when they are informed that an actual nuclear missile is headed for the city, and the shelter is assailed by people frantically seeking refuge: with those willing to let them in, and those who oppose. But Doctor Monroe opens the shelter, announcing that there is no nuclear threat… but will there lives ever be the same? Giuliano Montaldo handles this interesting premise with an editing rhythm that makes the tension palpable. |
